Palm oil import cut to 30,000 tonnes

The Commerce Ministry will halve to cut an imported value of palm oil from 60,000 tonnes to 30,000 tonnes as worrying impacts of importing to hit local price.

The Edible Palm Oil SubCommittee today proposes cut the import to balance supply. The import is an urgent measure to solve the country's supply shortage.

The final decision will make on Wednesday by the Edible Palm Oil Committee and he import volume has to be finished by the end of next month.

The figure came after the meeting of the committee with involved agencies, including Crushing Palm Oil Association, Oil Palm Plantation and Palm Oil Association of Thailand, and Palm Oil Refiners Association, on Tuesday.

Yanyong Phuangrach, directorgeneral of the Internal Trade Department, said that the meeting agreed to import 30,000 tonnes of crude olein which foresees the volume will not affect local palm oil farmers. However, palm oil fruits supply will increase when the harvest season will start in March.

"The import should help solve the shortage of cooking palm oil soon," said Yanyong, who is also chairman of the subcommittee.
