The family of one of the dead outlaws asserts the men were executed.
Provincial police chief Maj-General Nares Nanthachote said he was happy many locals understood the police and supported his officers.
Many brought flowers and contributed to a crime-fighting fund. Others said that even if the police had killed the fugitives as they surrendered they did not blame them because the men were responsible for many crimes, including the killing of police officers.
Akkharapol "Bank" Sampao, Nakhon Kwaenkhet-gun and Mongkol Yatra were found shot dead in Ayutthaya's Uthai district at 4.20am on Thursday.
Case officer Colonel Korn-ek Phetchaiwes said speculation that police were behind the killings was even more wearing than the manhunt for the trio.
