Two teenage men on a motorcycle shot Janthima Saithong while a passenger in her father's pickup
vehicle, which was being driven along the outbound lane of the Bang Na-Trat Highway.
Her parents were unable to shed light on a motive, but suggested loud music being played in the vehicle may have annoyed the men.
The shooting occurred near a service station about the 25-kilometre marker of the highway in Bang Bo district of Samut Prakan.
The victim's mother, Songkran, said teenagers hanging about the station had pointed at the vehicle.
Two of the teens then followed the vehicle driven by father Jaroen, who was playing music loud on a new car audio system.
Songkran said the pillion passenger fired five rounds at the vehicle before speeding off.
There were seven occupants in the vehicle at the time but only Janthima was struck.
Songkran said other teenagers in the group from the service station followed the vehicle to Ruam Chai Pracharak Hospital, where her daughter was admitted. They taunted her before fleeing.
Songkran described her third-grade daughter as an outgoing girl who loved sports and recreation. She danced and was in the Bang Phli Noi School band.
Bang Bo police have some information that could lead to the identity of the teenagers and hope to make arrests soon.
