10 soldiers hurt in blasts

At least 10 soldiers were injured in three separate explosions in Narathiwat and Pattani yesterday.

Published on January 11, 2008

The first was at 9.45am at a school in Rangae district of Narathiwat. The bomb was detonated as soldiers assigned to the school arrived in a military vehicle.

It is believed the bomb was planted overnight near a tree in the Ban Pase school where military vehicles routinely stop. It was detonated remotely.

Sgt-Major Somsak Julaphan and Corporal Smit Khamsri were injured. The school has been closed.

A second explosion at around 10am at Ban Ba Ngo in Rangae targeted a group of six soldiers on motorcycles returning from a local school. All sustained minor injuries, police said.

At the same time in Yarang district in Pattani, another explosion injured two soldiers patrolling a road connecting the district with Yala province.

Privates Witthaya Sangsaikaew and Pattanachai Patduang were injured as they arrived in a vehicle to commence a routine patrol. The bomb hidden near the road was detonated remotely, police said.

In another incident, civilian Somphong Chantraphan was injured in a gun attack in Than To district of Yala at around 1am yesterday.
