He said the planned extension was expected to be one of the very first issues before the next education minister. "The ministry under my supervision will no longer push for the promulgation of any law," he added.
The extension of the retirement age beyond 60 was needed because of a new ministry project to train senior teachers in many specialised fields of knowledge, Wijit said. He added they should be given more time in service to fully utilise what they had learned.
Under the new project, selected government teachers will also be required to undergo performance evaluations every three years and will be paid extra for their additional skills acquired through the training programmes. Those failing the appraisal will not receive the extra fee until they pass it.
