New Year drunk driving cases lower than last year

The amount of drunk drivers during the New Year 2008 break's "seven dangerous days" was 1,700 cases lower than the previous year possibly due to the public awareness of dangers of such action, said Director-General of the Probation Department on Thursday.

From December 28, 2007, to January 3, 2008, there were 3,212 cases that the nationwide courts had ordered for probation - consisting of 3,047 cases of drunk driving and 165 cases of other traffic law-violating charges, Nattee Jitsawang said. This year's period was 1,727 cases lower than the same period last year, which had 4,774 cases of drunk driving that the courts had ordered for probation, he added.

Bangkok had the most drunk driving cases during the New Year 2008 break at 348 cases, followed by Nakhon Ratchasima at 332, Surin at 225, Buri Ram at 193, Lampang at 171, Ratchaburi at 156, Chaiyaphum at 139, Khon Kaen at 100, Sakhon Nakhon at 94 and Si Sa Ket at 92.

Nattee credited the continuous anti-drunk driving campaign for making over 80 per cent of public members know that drunk drivers would be sent on court, put of probation and serve social service hours. Thus led to motorists being more careful and the lower amount of drunk drivers arrested during the New Year break this year, he said. He went on that the department would co-operate with related agencies to carry on such campaign and set up checkpoints to the Songkran Festival in April.
