His Majesty the King yesterday approved the use of a seven-tiered umbrella for the urn of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, to honour her for being a good sister and a great contributor to the country.
The 84-year-old Princess passed away on January 2.
The seven-tiered umbrella is the highest honour for the Princess, who was not born a Somdej Chaofa (Celestial Princess) in the royal hierarchy. At birth, she was a Mom Chao.
His Majesty's approval was announced after Their Majesties the King and Queen arrived at the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall to make merit in a dedication to the Princess.
His Majesty loved his sister dearly, and had great respect for her. She looked after him during his youth.
"The Princess should receive great honour," the royal announcement said.
After the announcement was read, His Majesty laid a garland, lit incense sticks and candles to pay respect to Buddha statues and monks. A prayer service followed, after which His Majesty gave gifts and robes to monks.
Hundreds of people lined the route between Chitralada Palace and the
Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall to see Their Majesties. The Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall is located within the Grand Palace.
Their Majesties' children and grandchildren accompanied them.
At 10.30am this morning, another royal merit-making ceremony will take place at the throne hall.
Members of the public will then be able to pay their respects before the body of the Princess between 2pm and 4pm. From Friday, members of the public can attend the throne hall between 9am and 4pm.
The Royal Household Bureau will distribute pictures of the Princess' royal urn to those attending the throne hall.
