Security beefed up in Bangkok

Security has been beefed up to protect Pojaman Shinawatra, wife of ousted prime minister Thaksin, a source in the Metropolitan Police said yesterday.

After Pojaman's return to Bangkok yesterday, teams of experts were assigned to keep a close eye on the Criminal Court, the Department of Special Investigation, Election Commission office, as well as the Shinawatras' home and routes to such places, a source revealed.

With Thaksin living in exile but saying he will return to the country soon, police fear his supporters, protesters or people with illintentions may seek to instigate trouble or a public confrontation, the source said.

Thaksin was expected to stay in Bangkok or his hometown Chiang Mai once he returns, the source said. Officers have also been assigned to prepare security there.

Measures include intelligence work, special checkpoints, plus mobile and installed closecircuit video cameras.

The logistics must be ready in case of an emergency, the source said.
