Primary sugar-cane price raised to Bt600 a tonne

The Cabinet yesterday approved an increase in the primary sugar-cane price for the production season 2007/08 to Bt600 per tonne, and to extend the repayment period for the Bt17 billion owed by the Sugar Cane Fund to the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives for another 11 years.

However, the Cabinet decided not to increase the retail sugar price by Bt0.50 per kilogram as requested, as it feared the impact on consumers, according to the government's spokesman.

The approval of the primary price was in response to the Industry Ministry's recommendation that the government ease the burden of sugar-cane farmers, because the minimum price is much lower than the actual production cost.

The Cabinet also instructed the Energy Ministry to ensure that daily sugar-cane-based ethanol production is increased from last year's 7.4 million litres to 8 million litres this year.

The daily production of E-10 will be increased to 11 million litres, while that of E-20 will be lifted to 200,000 litres late this year.
