Escap warns of risks

Asia-Pacific economies must tread carefully amid signs of financial-market volatility in the coming months, on downsides from the US sub-prime mortgage problem and a slowing US economy, warned the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (Escap).

A preview of its report highlights new and complex challenges the region will face. The report asks how well the Asia-Pacific economies will manage the continued uncertainty in the international financial markets.

Will there be a further spillover from the US sub-prime markets into Asia's financial and banking sectors, or is it an opportunity from which the region can benefit? Will the global rise in energy and food prices trigger fresh inflationary pressures and higher interest rates in Asia? What will be the spillover effects of the already weakening US dollar on Asia's export capacity?

Escap's report comes out tomorrow.
