Everton crash out of Cup on day of shocks

Sunderland, England (dpa) - Oldham Athletic pulled off the biggest shock of the FA Cup third round on Saturday, putting out Premier League Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park on a day of surprises.

Gary McDonald got the only goal of the game on the stroke of half-time to eliminate Everton.

Coventry City also caused a notable upset away from home as they beat Blackburn Rovers 4-1 at Ewood Park.

The Championship side, who ousted Manchester United out of the League Cup earlier in the season, took a first-half lead through the Maltese forward Michael Mifsud.

Elliott Ward's 64th-minite penalty made it 2-0, Dele Adebola got a third and, although David Bentley pulled one back, Mifsud's second for the final score settled the affair.

Bolton Wanderers also went out to lower-league opposition, beaten 1-0 at home by Sheffield United. Their manager, Bryan Robson, had been under pressure, but his side earned him some breathing space with the win from Australian midfielder David Carney.

There was a shock, too, at League One Huddersfield, where Chris Brandon hit an 81st-minute winner to put out Birmingham City 2-1.

Sunderland completed the list of Premier League casualties, well-beaten 3-0 at home by Wigan Athletic.

Paul Scharner put them ahead with a stooping header after 18 minutes, Paul McShane put through his own goal 10 minutes into the second half and David Cotterill settled things with a swerving drive 14 minutes from time.

Bulgarian forward Dimitar Berbatov continued his rich vein of form with both Tottenham goals as they drew 2-2 with Reading, while the other all-Premier League tie between West Ham and Manchester City finished goalless.

David Nugent got the only goal as Portsmouth survived a difficult trip to Ipswich 1-0.

Middlesbrough had their nervous moments but eventually did enough to see off Bristol City. They fell behind to Liam Fontaine's 18th- minute strike, but recovered to win 2-1 with goals from Stewart Downing and David Wheater.

Chelsea were also less than convincing, but they scrambled through their West London derby against Queens Park Rangers, Lee Camp's own- goal being enough to give them a 1-0 win.

Havant and Waterlooville were the only one of the non-league sides in action to avoid defeat, Rocky Baptiste's 87th-minute equaliser earning them a 1-1 draw at Swansea.

Chasetown went ahead against Cardiff City of the Championship, but ended up being comfortably beaten 3-1, while Cambridge United also held the lead briefly at Molineux, but Wolverhampton came back to beat them 2-1. Dagenham and Redbridge went down 5-2 at Southend.
