Undisputed winners to be validated

The Election Commission (EC) is expected today to start endorsing the first batch of voting results for 100 to 200 winning candidates, EC member Sodsri Satayathum said yesterday.

Published on January 3, 2008

"The endorsement will begin with those undisputed results which should be sufficient to allow the convening of the House within the 30-day deadline," she said.

For disputed results and those linked to electoral fraud, the EC will try to complete its probes by January 15, she said.

Sodsri said the EC will not bow to any pressure relating to its review of campaign violations.

She also said police investigator Maj General Chaiya Siriamphankul would complete the investigation on the election fraud case in Buri Ram. She was reacting to a demand for his removal by the People Power Party on grounds of unfairness.

A group of 20 anti-junta activists yesterday demonstrated outside the Election Commission's headquarters apparently against the disqualifications of three People Power Party candidates in Buri Ram.

The rally was organised by the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship.

Four demands were issued - a just review of election fraud, acceptance of defence rebuttals relating to the red cards, retraction of EC member Sodsri's threats to stop working in order to foil the coalition, and end to the junta's political meddling.

The EC has requested Buri Ram police to beef up security after the chairman of the provincial election office received a death threat following the issuing of red cards.
