Prayers illustrate strong bond between monarchy and grieving people

The Kingdom had been holding its breath, but still the passing of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana has brought about great sorrow for Thai people everywhere.

Months of great anxiety and deep concern about the Princess's health have once again underlined the closeness between the Thai monarchy and the people. Thousands have streamed inside Siriraj Hospital to pay great respect and show deep affection for the Princess. Prayers had been said, there and around the country.

It was not until the early hours yesterday that we were informed of her passing. Although sadness now befalls us, Princess Galyani will always be remembered for her gaiety, intelligence, strength and benevolence. And last but not least, her selfless role in support of the monarchy's strong linkage to the modern Thai society as well as HM the King as her younger brother.

She lived 84 years and more, leading a full and rich life, much of which was dedicated to improving the welfare of the Thai people.

As the sister to two Chakri kings - His Majesties King Ananda Mahidol and King Bhumibol Adulyadej - she performed her duty with impeccable grace and elegance.

In her work, she always trod carefully, staying closely behind her brothers, watching over the Kingdom.

In the early years, she took great care of King Ananda and also King Bhumibol. They grew up amid much love and tenderness under the wings of the Princess Mother and the Princess.

On several occasions, she represented His Majesty the King and performed duties on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen as well.

When the Princess Mother got old and became weak, Princess Galyani looked after her with gratitude and a full sense of responsibility.

There were several pictures of Princess Galyani and the Princess Mother taken together, revealing very touching moments between mother and daughter. The pictures remind us of the bonds that were forged when they were young, always taking care of each other through the years. When the Princess Mother became older, her daughter was always there for her.

In those later years, His Majesty the King was always relieved to know Princess Galyani was around to look after their mother. The King was particularly attached to the Princess Mother and appreciated her sister would be there to provide tender care.

His Majesty the King could not have become one of the greatest kings of the Chakri Dynasty without the support of these two women.

Indeed, for half a century and more, Princess Galyani devoted herself to public services. She wanted all Thais to be equipped with better knowledge and obtain a higher standard of living and health to enjoy fruitful lives.

She taught at universities selflessly, enduring long hours even when she was tired and always completing her duties.

As a teacher, she might have been strict at times but her students always realised she was kind at heart.

Princess Galyani also loved music dearly. When she was young, she would listen to melodies all the time. This appreciation for music was carried throughout her life.

She set up a personal fund to support young Thai talents so that they may have an opportunity to study abroad and take part in concerts that broadened their horizons.

Princess Galyani presided over countless charities, acting as chairperson of the Kidney Foundation, which was founded by the Princess Mother.

Other organisations and institutions under her guidance and care were in the education, welfare and health sectors. These works proved immensely beneficial to a great many needy Thais.

Because she gave so generously, a gratified country now weeps over her passing.

She will always remain in our hearts and be remembered for making enormous contributions so that we may better our lives.

She was the good daughter of the Princess Mother, the caring sister of King Ananda and King Bhumibol, and a loving Princess for all Thais.
