336 died in road accidents in the past five days of New Year break

The past five days of so-called seven dangerous days of New Year break had claimed 336 lives and injured 3,984 people in 3,627 road accidents nation-wide, the Road Safety Centre (RSC) announced on Wednesday.



The accumulated road accidents was 58 cases more than the same period last year while the toll figure of 336 was 15 cases less than that of last year and the injury figure was 14 cases more than that of last year.

Khon Kaen had the highest accumulated road toll at 18 deaths, while Chiang Rai had the most accidents at 123 cases and also had the highest injuries at 132 persons, said permanent secretary for the Education Ministry, Jaruayporn Thoranin, in her capacity as a committee member of the RSC.

Mukdahan, Mae Hong Son, Satun, Pattani and Narathiwat provinces had not reported any road accident death so far.

On Tuesday alone, there were 804 accidents nation-wide killing 74 people and injuring 903 others. Over a third of the accidents resulted from drunk driving while most accident took place on stretch sections of secondary roads between 6pm to 8pm, she said. Some 1,700,600 vehicles were stopped at checkpoints nation-wide and 41,812 motorists violated traffic laws - mostly for failing to show driving licences and for not wearing helmets.
