3 PPP candidates in Buri Ram get red cards

The Election Commission announced Sunday that three winning candidates of the People Power Party in Buri Ram's Constituency 1 were disqualified and banned from contesting in a sub-sequent by-election for alleged vote-buying.

The three candidates, who became the first to get red cards, are Prakij Poldej, Porchai Srisuriyanyothin and Rungroj Thongsri, EC Office secretary-general Sutthipol Thaweechaikarn announced.

Sutthipol said the EC found the three candidates guilty of buying votes and transporting voters to polling stations in the constituency.

The EC also revoked their right to stand in an election for a year and required them to pay for the cost of the sub-sequent by-election in Buri Ram's Constituency 1.

Sutthipol said the three would also face criminal legal action.

Earlier, the EC has issued yellow cards to three PPP winning candidates in Nakhon Ratchasima, meaning they could still contest in the sub-sequent by-election there.

So, far six winning candidates of the PPP have been disqualified, leaving its House seats to 227.

Democrat Party secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban said Sunday that he expected the EC to disqualify dozens of PPP winning candidates, and thus the Democrat would have its chance to try to form a coalition government.

EC commissioner Sumet Uppanisorn said the EC would know in a few days on how many more winning candidates would be disqualified.

He said the EC has now received over 100 complaints of alleged election frauds.
