Newcastle midfielder Barton charged with assault in incident

London- Joey Barton will appear in court in Liverpool Friday after being charged with common assault.



 

 

 The Newcastle midfielder was one of three people arrested by Merseyside Police in Liverpool early Thursday after an incident in Church Street, near the centre of the city.

 Barton missed Newcastle's 1-0 Premier League defeat to Wigan on Boxing Day with an ankle injury, and is thought to have gone to Liverpool for a night out.

 The 25-year-old joined Newcastle from Manchester City in the summer.
