Bonanza for medallists

[awards] The National Sport Development Fund yesterday approved more than Bt213 million in cash awards for successful local athletes in the Asian Indoor Games and the recent SEA Games.

The chairman of the NSDF's executive board, Deputy Prime Minister Paiboon Wattanasiritham, presided over the meeting.

Athletes who represented Thailand at the Indoor Games held in Macau from October 26 to November 3 will receive Bt21.25 million. The team finished second amongst 36 participating nations with 19 gold, 28 silver and 21 bronze medals.

Of the financial support, Bt14.35 million will be presented to athletes, with Bt2.59 million and Bt4.305 million going to coaches and the sports associations respectively.

In addition, Bt191.76 million has been allocated for those successful at the SEA Games in Nakhon Ratchasima from December 6 to 15. Thailand captured the overall title with a big haul of 183 gold, 123 silver and 103 bronze medals.

From the overall budget for the Games, Bt130.8 million will go to the athletes, while coaches will receive Bt21.72 million and Bt39.24 million goes for sports associations.

For both the Asian Indoor Games and the SEA Games, each gold medallist will receive Bt200,000, with Bt100,000 and Bt50,000 going to each silver and bronze medallists respectively.
