SEC chief Thirachai gets four more years

The Cabinet yesterday approved the extension of Securities and Exchange Commission secretary-general Thirachai Phuvanatnaranubala's tenure for another four years.

Published on December 26, 2007

Thirachai's first term will end on December 27.

The extension was expected by Thirachai, who said last week that he was likely to be granted another term - or at least the post of acting secretary-general - since the political situation was still in a transitional stage and the revised Securities and Exchange Act was still subject to approval by the National Legislative Assembly.

He said he would have to step down eventually, once the new law had been approved and implemented. An independent board will then be set up to select a secretary-general for the SEC.

THAI raises domestic fuel surcharges

Thai Airways International (THAI) is increasing fuel surcharges for passenger travel on domestic flights because of the continued increase in global fuel costs.

Executive vice president Pandit Chanapai said the company had adjusted surcharges to compensate for fuel costs.

Fuel costs in the world market have increased on a regular basis, and the increase will affect passengers travelling on THAI's domestic flights, on all classes of travel, and those whose air tickets were issued by THAI's ticketing offices and sales representatives in Thailand and worldwide.

All domestic flights within Thailand, for air tickets purchased or issued overseas, will have a surcharge of US$20 (Bt674) per flight coupon, up from the previous $10, effective from January 10.

All domestic flights within Thailand, for air tickets purchased or issued in Thailand, will have a surcharge of Bt650 per flight coupon, up from Bt400, effective from December 17.

Pertamina to import LPG from Thailand

Indonesian oil company Pertamina will start importing 3-kilogram cylinders of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from Thailand early next year, reports Antara News Agency.

Chief of Pertamina's communications division Wisnuntoro said on Monday that about 2 million LPG cylinders would be imported from Thailand in January and February 2008.

"Pertamina should have started importing the tubes this week but because of the long holiday, it will start early in January," Wisnuntoro said.

He said the import of 2 million LPG tubes was intended to meet the demand of kerosene conversion into LPG by 4.2 million units this year.

He said Indonesia demanded 10.2 million LPG cylinders this year but that domestic producers were only able to provide about 6 million.

Therefore, he said the government permitted Pertamina to import LPG from Thailand next month, because the demand for LPG cylinders next year would reach 23 million units.
