Although he wanted a girl and was a little disappointed, he quickly discovered that a baby of either gender completely changes your perspective on life.

Many, if not most people, believe women were born with a natural talent for raising children, but a lot of men do a great job of it. Jitprasong Joradon lost his wife to cancer a year ago and has proved his ability to raise their two children on his own.

It's not all fathers in this issue, though. There are dos and don'ts for expectant mothers - such as never drinking alcohol or using steroids, and avoiding stress, sex and heavy exercise. Light exercise is fine, like aqua workouts, yoga and pilates.

Also recommended are water, milk and juice and freshly cooked food. There's a list of alternative dishes designed for pregnant women who are, after all, eating for two.

Cooking for newborn babies isn't complicated. The secret is in the stock, with a fish, chicken, pork or vegetable base. With these you can make delicious poached rice with meats and a pineapple syrup.
