Prices of canned fish, dairy products to rise after increase in production costs

The Commerce Ministry early next year will allow producers of canned mackerel and dairy products to increase their prices to compensate for rising production costs.

Published on December 25, 2007

Internal Trade Department director-general Yangyong Phuangrach yesterday said the agency would approve price hikes for both products, manufacturers having sought such increases since early this year.

Producers said the cost of raw materials had jumped considerably since early in the year, particularly mackerel, for which supply has been lower. Fish canners have asked for a Bt2-per-can rise.

The cost of fresh milk has also increased 25 per cent in the past year to US$5,000 (Bt168,000).

However, the ministry may not allow full price increases, as it is mindful of not putting too high a burden on consumers, said Yangyong.
