The Teddy House shop at Bangkok's Central Chidlom marks the royal birthday with fuzzy cheer

Published on December 23, 2007

Teddy House is marking its anniversary with a special collection of 980 bears wearing sweaters in yellow and pink each adorned with a Thai-numeral "80" to celebrate the birthday of HM the King.

The event "Double 9th" was recently held to launch the collection at the Teddy House shop on the seventh floor of Central Chidlom by its managing directors Pituporn and Pituphum Hiranyapich. It was attended by dozens of people eager to get their hands on one of these adorable toy bears.

The "Double 9th" refers to fact that it's nine years since Teddy House was launched, and the event is taking place during the Ninth Reign of the Chakri Dynasty.

"Our company has reached its ninth anniversary and all proceeds from selling these limited-edition bears will go to the charities under the patronage of HM the King," says Pituporn.

Among those who adopted a teddy bear at the event were actress Khemanit "Pancake" Jamikorn and her mother Nuannong.

"I'm one of Teddy House's regulars, and update my collection with every new bear. My mum loves the bears to and I get spurred on by her passion," says Khemanit.

"We share similar tastes," says Nuannong. "Pancake frequently gives me teddy bears as presents, and vice versa. The bears are cute with fur so soft you can't help touching it. Cuddling them brings instant stress relief."

The highlight on the day was the launch of 99 limited-edition Mohair Bears, available in nine colours. The bears are handmade with their fur fashioned from wool. It took just a few minutes before all 99 bears were grabbed by delighted admirers.

Viwat and Kularb Sawatyanont managed to bag 10 mohair bears for their children, Varisa and Krisnon, for a total of around Bt100,000.

"We have been fans of Teddy House bears for seven years and turn up for the limited-edition mohair bears every year. We have a room displaying around 100 bears at home. The mohair bears are distinctive for their soft fur and no two are the same," says Kularb.

Chusak and Supattra Ausombatchai also joined the event with their daughter Veeraya; they hunted down the same number of the rare mohairs as Viwat and Kularb.

"This year, we paid between Bt2,000 to Bt10,000 for different sizes of mohair bears to add to our collection of 30. My daughter loves hugging them, and I think they'll encourage her loving side as she grows up," says Supattra.

"There's an inner child in every adult," adds Bootsaree Angkanawatana, director of Thai Market. "I'm very fond of teddy bears, and you'll find them in every corner of my home - even in my car."
