Thaksin, 49 others charged

The Assets Examination Committee submitted its report yesterday charging 49 officeholders, including former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, with abuse of power in rushing through the two- and three-digit lotteries, causing Bt37.9 billion in damage to the state.

AEC member Jaruvan Maintaka handed the file in person to chief prosecutor Seksan Bangsomboon, who is in charge of special litigation.

A team of public prosecutors has 30 days to review the case before seeking an indictment in the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions, a fast-track tribunal for one-tier review of corruption cases.

The AEC report contends that the Thaksin administration contravened established procedures in setting up the new lotteries and distributing the ticket sale proceeds.
