Speaking at a meeting of senior officers, the police general said the violence in the South in particular had reduced to a satisfactory level and that detailed statistical records would soon be made public.

He said crime rates in general had also dropped as a result of improved police functions and new administrative measures to reward well-behaved officers and punish those who are corrupt or incompetent.

Yesterday's meeting also voted 107-5 to approve a new police uniform.

Seripisut said he was not worried about post-election protests or violence and that police had the situation under control. e said police would have more time to scrutinise or alter a bill aimed at the reconstruction of the Royal Thai Police. The bill could not be vetted by the National Legislative Assembly in time before tomorrow's election.
