NLA to debate controversial bills at the last minute

The National Legislative Assembly is expected to deliberate a number of controversial legislations, including the Internal Security Bill, on Friday's night, the last day of debating new laws, NLA Speaker Meechai Ruchuphan said on Thursday.

"The debate on controversial drafts will take place at the end of the session so that it will not block the deliberation of other legislations," he said.

Meechai said lawmakers found themselves in the middle two rival camps - one wanting the NLA to stop passing new laws and another demanding the NLA to push for a quick passage of several key bills.

"We are in a difficult position - do the job and get scolded at or don't do the job and face the legal consequences," he said in reference to the rally by nongovernmental organisations demanding the NLA to shut down and the threat to prosecute lawmakers for neglecting their duties.

Rally organiser Jon Ungphakorn said protesters would continue to rally in front of Parliament today and tomorrow and that they may come up with a new tactics to raise awareness on why the NLA should not debate on the ISB and other controversial bills.
