70% vote overseas

More than 70 per cent of eligible overseas voters have cast ballots in the advance election - a figure that indicates the awareness of Thais living abroad, the foreign ministry said yesterday.

Of 80,161 eligible voters who registered at Thai embassies and consulates around the globe, some 58,807 people or 73 per cent cast ballots from December 3-16. The five highest turnouts were in the United States, Germany, Singapore, China and United Arab Emirates.

The turnout this year is the highest for ballots organised overseas by the authorities since 2000, an official at the ministry said. Previous turnouts averaged around 35 per cent.

Officials from 90 embassies in 65 countries will deliver ballot boxes this week. The last is due to arrive in Bangkok today. The ballots would be sent to local stations for counting together with others at the end of voting on Sunday, he said.
