Grant Hill scored 22 points and the Suns snapped the Spurs' 13-game home winning streak, 100-95, on Monday night despite a season-high 36 points and 17 rebounds by Duncan.
"Timmy got going, he's the best," Hill said of the two-time league MVP. "We weathered their offensive surges and played good defence. They're a great team, and we were just able to prevail at the end."
Brazilian speedster Leandro Barbosa had 18 points and Amare Stoudemire added 17 for the Suns (18-7) who posted their first regular-season victory at San Antonio since March 2003.
"I thought it was a good win for us," said Suns All-Star guard Steve Nash, who finished with 10 points and 10 assists. "Tonight the effort was there, and somehow we found a way to win over those guys."
Argentine Manu Ginobili scored 18 points and Michael Finley added 15 for the Spurs (18-6) who were without Frenchman Tony Parker (jammed left ankle) for the third consecutive game.
"Tim did everything he could to make us win this game," Ginobili said. "It was frustrating for us not to help him get the win."
The Spurs had won 19 consecutive contests at AT&T Centre, including 13 in a row to start the season. But the Suns got a small measure of revenge to end the defending champion's streak.
The two Western Conference heavyweights were meeting for the first time since the Spurs eliminated the Suns in a chippy six-game semifinal series as Stoudemire and Raja Bell were each hit with one-game suspensions for leaving the bench after Nash was hip-checked off the court by Robert Horry.
In another tightly-contested game, neither team was able to take more than a two-point lead in the final 10 minutes until the Suns made the stops.
The Spurs led 95-94 on Ginobili's lay-up with 28 seconds remaining, but it was to be their last.
Nash missed a three-point try, but Stoudemire grabbed the rebound and made the go-ahead free throws, after drawing a foul with 17 seconds to go.
San Antonio's Bruce Bowen missed a wide-open three-point try from the left corner that would have levelled the game. Hill grabbed the rebound and sank both free throws after drawing a foul with 10 ticks remaining for a 98-95 advantage.
Following a timeout, Ginobili took the inbounds pass with seven seconds left. But Diaw stole the ball and drew a clear path foul. The Frenchman sank one of two free throws and Nash split a pair to seal the win.
"They were down by three, so I tried to stay pretty close to him, so he couldn't get a three-point try up," Diaw said. "He tried to cross-over, but I was too close and the ball ended up in my hands."
