The supervision of absentee voting done by the book: EC

The Election Commission organised the last week's absentee and advance voting in accordance with the 2007 Constitution and relevant organic laws as well as the precedents set in the 2001 general election, EC member Sumeth Ubanisakorn said on Wednesday.

"The EC has done everything by the book and is ready to defend itself if summoned by the Administrative Court," he said in reference to the petition filed by the New Aspiration Party challenging the voting supervision.

The NAP contends that the EC exceeded its mandate in allowing voters to cast advance ballots without checking their conflicting schedule on Sunday, the Election Day.

Sumeth's colleague Prapun Naigowit said the provisions relating to the advance voting were designed to facilitate voters who would be absent form their constituency on the Election Day.

It was misleading to contend that the last week's voting was just for absentee voters who could not cast ballots in their hometown, he said.

He said he saw no justification why the NAP wanted to litigate on the issue.
