Abhisit escaped unscathed from the BMW sedan after his driver hit the back of a six-wheeled truck.

The young leader was on his way back to the capital after campaigning in Nakhon Ratchasima when the accident happened in Saraburi's Kaeng Khoi district.

"I am OK though I have some bruises and a minor headache," he said, adding he woke up in time to brace himself for the crash after hearing a loud braking sound.

The Democrat leader's chauffeur, Thanusilp Chaichote, said the truck left a petrol station and immediately cut in front of his vehicle to make a U-turn.

The BMW's front was badly damaged, with its radiator broken and the windscreen smashed.

Abhisit said he was not superstitious, and refused to interpret the accident as an omen. But he had trouble with a second car as well.

It had a faulty brake when exiting the expressway on Bangkok's Rama VI Road and he had to be transferred to a third car before reaching his office this morning.

The Democrat Party has unveiled its final campaign slogan "Elect Abhisit as prime minister, Vote Democrats". Its key message is that an honest leader will revitalise the economy while a corrupt leader will trigger economic ruin.
