Avoid anti-coup sentiments: Suwit

Puea Pandin Party leader Suwit Khunkitti urged voters yesterday to cast ballots rationally instead of emotionally to avoid an error of judgement to install a certain party in power for no other reason than voting symbolically against the coup.

"I don't want voters to cast ballots just to vent their anger at the coup," Suwit said in response to predictions the People Power Party might ride to victory on a wave of anti-coup sentiment.

Meanwhile, Matchima Thipataya Party Prachai Leophairatana warned Thailand would see a renewed crisis if the former ruling party was elected to office.

"The old party caused economic crisis, corruption, severe poverty, unemployment and crimes," said the businessman-turned-politician. He was referring to the People Power Party (PPP), which is regarded as a reincarnation of former premier Thaksin Shinawatra's disbanded Thai Rak Thai.

Suwit said he was upbeat that his party would become the core coalition leader because it was the tangible alternative to the Democrats and the PPP.

Some 60 per cent of voters remained undecided and they could opt for Puea Pandin, he said.

Suwit admitted he had had informal talks about being part of a coalition government but would not make any commitments before studying the balloting outcome.
