Election to proceed as planned: EC member

Election Commission member Prapun Naigowit yesterday insisted the general election would go ahead. There is speculation it could be postponed if there is unrest.

"The defence minister and the government have reassured people the schedule remains intact, while the Election Commission has never even considered putting off the date," he said.

Yesterday many cast ad-vance votes across the country. Today is another advance-

voting day.

Advance votes will be sealed and counted with those cast on polling day.

Prapun said the commission was investigating an incident Roi Et where unmarked ballot papers had been burned.

Meanwhile Deputy Prime Minister Sonthi Boonyaratglin, who cast his advance vote yesterday, said all parties would have to accept the result. Sonthi, who overthrew the Thaksin Shinawatra government in last year's coup, said understanding between the people and politicians was needed if post-poll unrest was to be avoided.

Visiting a polling booth in Lop Buri, Sonthi was confronted by an opponent of the coup.

Council for National Secu-rity acting chairman Chalit Pukbhasuk hoped the election proceeded as scheduled. "There shouldn't be any accidents that will lead to its postponement. We really don't know the motives of those who want the polls put off," he said.

Chalit, who has been acting as council chairman since Sonthi retired in September, dismissed as groundless allegations made by People Power leader Samak Sundaravej that the military was behind a recent mob outside Parliament.
