Lecturer wants CU chief to quit NLA

A Chulalongkorn University lecturer called yesterday for CU President Suchada Kiranan-dana to resign from the National Legislative Assembly because of the conflict over the bill to turn the top university into an autonomous institute.

Anan Laolertworakul, who teaches at the Faculty of Arts, said: "If she [Suchada] resigns it will show CU management is not behind attempts to push the bill through second and third readings in the Assembly."

The NLA is now considering the bill, which would transform Chulalongkorn from a state university to an autonomous body.

The CU Lecturers Council is against the bill, and says the university "community" was excluded from the drafting process.

"The content of the bill that has been put before NLA now is also different from what was published on CU website," the council's chairman Porpan Vachajitpan said.

He said the version in the NLA restricted the rights and liberties of individuals.

Anan said the bill, if enacted, would make it impossible to sue CU executives even if they made management mistakes.

Chuchat Thamcharoen, who teaches at the Faculty of Engineering, said if all members in the NLA committee vetting the bill were sincere in their support for the Bill, they should state in the draft law that they would not take executive posts at the university over the next 10 years.

"They should also state in the law that each of them will pay a Bt10-million fine if three years after CU becomes autonomous, negative results are evident."

Chuchat said the NLA should hold public hearings to comprehensively listen to people before proceeding to vet the bill further.
