Flurry of bills vetted at NLA

The National Legislative Assembly yesterday passed the first readings of several draft bills, including a mandatory sobriety test when deemed necessary by traffic police.

The amended traffic law is designed to pre-empt frivolous arguments with motorists who claim they are not drunk.

A total of 45 bills at various stages of the vetting process were deliberated in a rush to clear the backlog before the legislators' term expires.

For amendments to the Names Act, the vetting committee decided to remove a draft provision to allow transsexuals to switch their title following a sex change operation. But it agreed to allow married women to choose whether to they want to be addressed as "Miss" or "Mrs".

The NLA also opted for its legislative version of amended provisions on the credentials for board executives for the Thai Health Foundation. This move, backed by a majority vote of 57-41, is seen as a snub to the interim administration because the government-sponsored draft is usually the principle version for new laws.
