Energy Minister Piyasvasti Amranand yesterday said under the MoU, Thailand would purchase 1,473 megawatts of electricity from the project for Bt2.05 per unit over 25 years. The project will be commissioned in 2013.
The MoU will involve three partners - Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat), Banpu Power and Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding (Ratch) - and the Lao government. Egat and Banpu Power are the project's developers and will own a combined 40 per cent stake of the joint venture, while Ratch will own 40 per cent and the Lao government 20 per cent.
The three partners will set up a sub-station in Nan province and a 500-kilowatt line to transmit power from the project to Thailand.
The transmission line will also be linked to the Mae Moh sub-station.
Hongsa Lignite is the ninth power project in Laos from which Thailand will buy electricity.
Separately, the committee agreed on draft standards for electrical products like rice cookers, water heaters, electric kettles, air-conditioners and refrigerators. The standards define their efficiency and energy-saving capacity, to conform government requirements.
