EC to sue People Power

The Election Commission (EC) will file a criminal lawsuit against the People Power Party (PPP) over its involvement in falsified membership records, its chairman Apichart Sukhagganond said yesterday.

Five EC members agreed the EC should file the lawsuit because the Supreme Court ruled last Tuesday the PPP had claimed Sithichai Kowsurat as a member by putting his name on the roster with a forged signature. Sithichai, a Puea Pandin candidate had his candidacy restored because of the court's verdict.

Based on membership documents supplied by the PPP, the EC disqualified Sitthichai last month for holding duplicate party membership.

The EC will also examine the case of a PPP MP candidate using pictures of ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra to campaign in his constituency, Apichart said.

PPP candidate Prasang Mongkonsiri informed the EC he had used Thaksin's images to boost his media campaign in the constituency of Uthai Thani, Apichart said.  However, Prasang insisted he took the action himself under the freedom given by the Constitution, the EC chairman said.

The EC would decide today if Prasang had violated regulations and whether he would be disbarred from the election, he added.
