Police will beef up security in Bangkok for the approaching New Year festival, concentrating on banks, gold shops, petrol stations and convenience stores, said Metropolitan Police chief Lt-General Assawin Kwanmuang yesterday.

Police throughout the city will establish checkpoints to stop suspicious vehicles. They will be looking for weapons and other illegal material. Checkpoints will be erected from Saturday.

Around-the-clock patrols will be dispatched at locations where crimes are frequent, including banks, gold shops, convenience stores and petrol stations.

Security will be stepped up at government offices, embassies and New Year-party venues, he said.

Bomb squads will be on standby, Assawin said.

He was confident vigilant policing would prevent incidents over the holiday period.
