Bill for consumers

A bill will be enacted next year setting out the responsibilities of manufacturers when consumers are affected by their unsafe products, a Bangkok seminar was told yesterday.

Justice Ministry permanent secretary Charan Phakd-ithanakul said the Producers' Responsibilities for Damage Caused by Unsafe Products Bill was being vetted by the National Legislative Assembly and should come into effect next year.

He said the draft law did not, however, permit consumers to lodge frivolous complaints against manufacturers.

"This law will not adversely affect business owners, but will ensure the quality of their products [meet required standards] and protect consumer safety," he said. Charan added that responsible producers would not be affected or suffer from higher production costs.

Office of Consumer Protection Board secretary-general Rassamee Wisthawate said the government and the judiciary were working on another consumer protection bill for quicker settlement of disputes between consumers and manufacturers.
