Victims could be bombers

Police are closely checking two of the victims of Tuesday night's explosion at an open-air restaurant in Pattani in the belief the unidentified men might be the bombers.

"Among the six people killed in the attack were two teenage men, and police have found nothing to identify them. Their bodies were also found very close to the bomb. We are investigating whether they were involved in the attack," Governor Panu Uthairat said yesterday.

The bomb planted inside a motorbike went off in the evening near the crowded restaurant in Muang district. Two people died on the spot and four later in hospital, while 25 were wounded.

Pattani police chief Maj-General Kririn Inkaew said the attack was believed to be in response to the recent arrests of five core leaders of the insurgency. The separatist militants wanted to show they still had power despite closer cooperation between authorities and the public which was hindering their efforts to use violence, he said.
