Assembly sets December 28 for its last session

The National Legislative Assembly will soon stop deliberating new bills and leave them for the next Parliament.

Its final session is scheduled for December 28, Speaker Meechai Ruchuphan said yesterday.

"In recent meetings I have been intervening to push for quick passage [of bills] but not in a hasty manner," he said.

Meechai urged NLA members to increase the number of committee meetings to expedite the vetting of draft provisions as a way to cut time for debate on the floor.

The NLA has already notified the government about this month's deadline to accept new drafts for first readings, he said.

In case the NLA has a huge backlog of bills for the second and third readings, it might convene a few extraordinary sessions in January to ensure a smooth transition, he said.

Following the activation of the new House, the junta-appointed NLA is slated to transform itself into a temporary Senate pending the senatorial election.
