Athletes to reassert supremacy

Thais are hoping to re-establish their supremacy in the athletics discipline as the Amateur Athletics Association Thailand [AAAT] expects its team to scoop more than 12 gold medals.

Athletics is one of many competitions in which Thai contestants always take home many  gold medals.

"Our team have been training here for two weeks. They have already accustomed themselves to the condition here. We [AAAT] think this team are in a good shape. Their development and strength of this squad has brightened the chance in many events," said Police Maj Gen Supanat Ariyamongkol, Thai team head coach.

In the track, the association believe their runners are capable of bagging the gold in the 4x 400m and 4x100m, both in men's and women's categories.

Saiphon Bia-wong, who has improved her record consistently, is likely to make Thailand's dream of grabbing the first-ever women's marathon gold come true.

Another gold medal is expected at women's heptathlon from experienced Wassana Winato, who has the edge on much of her opponents.

The association is certain that the Thai squad will give rivals a tough contest in the field event more than the Manila-hosted episode. They are pinning their hopes on discus throw, javelin throw and high jump.

"Our athletes are very fit this time. It will not be a closed competition any more," Supanat said.  A total of 45 gold medals will be up for grabs when the athletics get under way from Friday, starting with the men's decathlon.
