HM puts stress on unity

Honesty, less bias and mercy also important, monarch says

Published on December 3, 2007

His Majesty the King yesterday made a plea for national unity as the Kingdom steers its way through political uncertainty.

His Majesty's call came at yesterday's trooping the colour, commencing celebrations for the King's birthday. He turns 80 on Wednesday.

"The country's situation these days, as everybody knows in their mind, is uncertain. If Thais lack a national conscience and lack a sense of unity, the entire nation will face misfortune," he said in front of 13 battalions of Royal Guards in a parade at the Royal Plaza.

"May I beg all of you and all Thai citizens to consider and make decisions whether our nation is important or not. If yes, we should cling to honesty, reduce bias, enhance mercy and unity. Whatever we do, national security should be the ultimate goal," he said.

"Thailand is able to maintain sovereignty because we all realise our Thainess and our duty to protect our in-dependence and security. History has proved our souls are one. We never separate, but live in harmony."

Their Majesties the King and Queen, together with

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, appeared at the military parade.

The military swore an oath before Their Majesties. The Royal Anthem was played and 8,000 balloons with "Long Live the King" marked in silk were released.

There was a 21-gun salute. The guards chanted "Long Live the King" three times as Their Majesties the King and the Queen and the Crown Prince departed the plaza.
