UN chief to meet King

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will discuss a wide range of topics including global warming and His Majesty the King's sufficiency economy, but not Burma when he visits the Kingdom on December 9-11.

Ban's visit to Thailand has been scheduled prior to attending the UN conference on climate change on the Indonesian resort-island of Bali on December 11-13, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement yesterday.

His Majesty the King will grant him and his spouse a royal audience on December 10, following his meeting with Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont to discuss topics of common interest.

With Surayud, Ban will raise the issue of sustainable development in line with royal-initiative projects, and notably the sufficiency-economy philosophy.

They will also discuss Thailand's potential to achieve the Millennium Development Goal by 2015 and the role of the country in mitigating the impact of climate change.

Surayud said earlier that he would not discuss the political situation in neighbouring Burma with the UN chief, as he has already talked several times with UN special envoy Ibrahim Gambari.
