Some 2,000 policemen will provide security and direct traffic along Rama 5, Sri Ayutthaya, Rajdamnoen Nok, Rajdamnoen Klang, Rajdamnoen Nai, Mahachai and Na Phra Lan roads, which will be blocked at 10am and at 5.30pm on the King's birthday to make way for the royal family and their entourage.

Members of the public can wait along Rajdamnoen Avenue to see the monarch, said Traffic Police commander Panu Kerdlarppol.

He said Maharat Road at Tha Ratchaworadit would also be blocked from 5am to noon to make space for 20,000 people who were expected to attend His Majesty's appearance on a balcony at Chakri Mahaprasat Hall.

He urged people to use public transport, as heavy traffic congestion was expected in the area.

The Department of Medical Services has organised 750 public and private doctors and nurses from 22 agencies, institutes and hospitals to provide first aid to members of the public in some 30 tents in the area of the festivities, said the department's director-general, Dr Chatree Bancheun.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has arranged 30 mobile toilets to serve the expected crowds of well-wishers.
