Tariffs to end on Asean imports

The Customs Department will end tariffs on 90 per cent of Asean imports by the end of this month as part of the group's economic integration, while most other tariffs will be phased out by the end of 2010, director-general Visut Srisuphan said yesterday.

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the tariff cuts as part of the country's obligations under the Roadmap for Integration of Asean and the Asean Framework Agreement for Integration of the Priority Sectors.

The reduction of Asean imports is aimed at creating a single Asean market as part of the Asean Economic Community.

Thailand asked to maintain tariffs of 5 per cent for 13 sensitive items including fresh flowers, fresh cassava roots, coffee kernels and dried coconut.

Land prices up

Pantip Suratin, director general of the Treasury Department, said land prices increased by 10 per cent over the last four years. The survey, which the department is mandated to conduct every four years, covered 70 to 80 per cent of the country.

Plots that showed the highest rise in price were those close to recently completed roads. Some of these saw prices tripling.

The Interior Ministry presides over the survey to find out the updated land prices.
