Police raided the residence of Isman Isma-aeh, the director of Yala Technical College, and took six suspects into custody. The director was later granted bail while the remaining five were detained for further questioning, according to Pol Colonel Phumphet Piphatphetphum, police chief of Yala's Muang district.

The five are Muhamad Issa Bueto, Husen Hohsoh, Abdultolip Tosun, Bukri Meehi and Sithichok Mudwan. They are alleged to have connections to bomb-maker Sukree Jehae, who was arrested earlier, said Phumphet.

Security officials believe the five were involved in bombings in downtown Yala which caused damage at properties including car showrooms and the car park of the Southern Border Province Administrative Centre. No one was hurt in the blasts.

In neighbouring Pattani province, a farmer was shot dead yesterday while riding his motorbike home from work. Wut Hengjia, 60, was shot in the back by an unknown gunman.

The violence that erupted in the predominantly Muslim region at the beginning of 2004 has claimed more than 2,700 lives.
