Supreme Patriarch hails the King's dedication, beliefs His Holiness the Supreme Patriarch yesterday sent a written congratulatory message to His Majesty the King for his 80th birthday.

His Holiness hailed His Majesty for his dedication to the country and its people and his strong Buddhist beliefs.

He called on the faithful to regularly observe religious practices in honour of Buddhism and Lord Buddha.

"The tremendous grievances suffered by all subjects and foreigners during His Majesty's hospital treatment has proved him as a person who has won people's hearts all over the world," His Holiness said in a statement.

His Holiness and His Majesty the King built a special relationship following the 15 days His Majesty spent as a monk in 1956. The then Phra Sophon Khanaphorn was assigned as mentor to His Majesty.

Man, 18, held for rock attack

Police arrested a young man yesterday for hurling a rock through the windscreen of a moving vehicle late on Monday night and seriously injuring an 11-year-old boy.

Rangsan Chamnarnkarn, 18, told police he was under the influence of alcohol and had vented his anger because his girlfriend refused to go out with him that night.

"I am so sorry. I am saddened about what happened. I hurled the rock into the road without knowing that it would hit the vehicle and injure others," he said.

He said when he heard the rock hit the vehicle's windshield, he was so scared he fled the scene.

"No one else was involved," Rangsan said.

Police Region 7 commissioner Lt General Vorapong Chiewpreecha said Rangsan had been charged with attempted murder and causing damage to property.

Depression the cause: police

A depressed businesswoman yesterday jumped to her death from a fourth-floor Huai Khwang apartment.

Police said the body of Piyarat Sukthep, 33, a deputy manager of Digital Phone, a subsidiary of Advance Info Service, was discovered about 7.30am yesterday. She lived at the City Home Ratchada condominium on Ratchadaphisek Soi 10.

Huai Khwang police Major Nattapong Wongsri-on said the woman's mother, Rattanaporn Sukthep, 59, later told police her daughter  was in a depressed state yesterday. She said she saw her daughter jump from a window.
