Thai sharpshooters clinch first gold

Thai marksmen handed the host the first gold medal in the 24th SEA Games' shooting competition through the men's 50m pistol team.

The trio of Jakkrit Panichpatikum, Noppadon Sutiviruch and Saramon Jareangchit captured the gold with an impressive aggregate 1,654 points, leaving the second place Singapore far behind in 1,633 points. Vietnam took the bronze, following in one point.

The gold medal might be more meaningful for the veteran Jakkrit than his teammates as he was determined to win the gold for celebrating his mother's 59th birthday anniversary.

"I was really nervous before the competition as one of our team lacks experience in the Games like this. But we are lucky that Noppadon and I shot well today. By the way, I'm really happy that I fulfilled my aim of presenting my mom the gold in her birthday anniversary," said Jakkrit, who still has other final in hand this afternoon.

Good news also came from the men's 10m air rifle category when the team of Thanapat Thananchai, Varavut Matchacheep and Weerawat Chaisawat scored a total of 1,753 points to take the silver medal.

Singapore sealed the gold with 1,767 points, while Vietnam fired 1,744 points for the bronze medal.
