Burma win first gold

Burma's Saw Than-than surprised favourite shooters of Thailand and Malaysia to win the first gold medal of the 24th SEA Games through the women's 50m rifle prone.

Competing at the Sport Authority of Thailand's Shooting Range, the Burmese dark horse and defending title Nursuryani Mohd Taibi of Malaysia tied at an aggregate 587 points.

However, the Burmese outsider clinched her maiden gold medal with an impressive 99 points in the last series, while the Malaysian had to be content with a silver medal with three points behind.

"I'm really happy because this is my first gold medal after three times participating in the SEA Games. I'm so surprised that I beat the sharpshooter from Malaysia," said the 30-year-old Burmese shooter.

Erlinawati Chalid of Indonesia fired 586 points to take the bronze medal.

Thailand's medal prospect Thanyalak Chotphibunsin, Sasithron Hoingprasert and Paramaporn Ponglaokham finished a disappointing sixth, eighth and 10th respectively.
