Charter makers to monitor implementation of the constitution

A group of 50 charter writers Monday announced the launch of a campaign to monitor the enforcement of the 2007 Constitution starting with the December 23 election.

"The charter writers want to check on the compliance of charter provisions and the general election is a crucial test of the new political system," group spokeswoman Kannikar Banthoengchit said.

The group will convene its first meeting tomorrow, she said.

Its key figures include Seri Suwanpanont, Chirmsak Pinthong, Charan Pakdeethanakul and Wuthisan Tanchai.

Seri said he would focus on monitoring the Election Commission's supervision of the electoral process in order to ensure that the balloting takes place in accordance with the intent of the Constitution.

"I hope no political parties would try to find and exploit the loopholes to tamper with the electoral process," he said.

Commenting on flyers making a pun to ridicule the Constitution, he said the charter should be accorded with due respect as the highest law.
