
Police and rescue workers found the body of 62-year-old American man Michael Joseph Diron inside a Honda City car crushed by a bus, which was taking 260 Bangkok schoolchildren to visit Navy Base as part of scout camping activity.
Diron's Thai female companion Waranee Wanprasart, 32, was rushed to a nearby hospital along with four other injured persons. The four were chief petty officer 1st class Pakorn Robkhob, 36, Warin Udomamnuay, 27, chief petty officer 1st class Sathien Sunasanam, 37, and Manthana Klinnoi, 22.
An initial police investigation found that the bus suddenly rammed into the American man's car and other vehicles that were waiting for a green light at the intersection, Pol Lt Col Nipon Pomsanam of Sattahib police station said, the bus driver however used the chaotic situation to flee the scene.
Police would summon the bus operator for help to get the fleeing driver punished.
The students on the bus were not injured and were later transferred to another bus to go back to Bangkok.
