Modern Mom
Apart from a booklet, "Creativity! The Ways to Start Baby Genius", that comes with the magazine, there's an article that suggests how to decorate your baby's room to stimulate his or her mental development and how to design a play zone for toddlers. The magazine's theory is that every child can be a genius.
A Modern Mom poll shows that almost half of the 1,000 parents surveyed believe that a child's activities play a major role in building intelligence (42.8 per cent), while school comes second (27 per cent) in encouraging children to seek knowledge. The third factor (13.2 per cent) is travel, extra activities score 10.9 per cent and the media come in last at 6.5 per cent.
The Family Trip column is also geared to boosting young minds, advising that a trip to a museum is better than reading a book in helping a child learn about history.
Parents are undoubtedly the main players in a child's success, and to prove this point Modern Mom interviews Saksit "Tor" Vejsupaporn, Thailand's top pianist and singer, who became a success as a teenager. He thanks his parents for their support and for teaching him to "think outside the box". As a child, Tor studied the violin and also took lessons in swimming, drawing and the Thai language. "But I concentrated on one thing at a time," he says.
